Our Journey: Growing Fresh Food in the Sonoran Desert

Burke's Vegetable Garden was founded on a simple belief: fresh, honestly grown produce should be accessible to everyone, even in one of the most challenging climates in the country. Farming in the Sonoran Desert means working within extreme heat, minimal rainfall, and a growing season that most conventional wisdom says is impossible to sustain year-round. Rather than accept those limitations, we set out to prove that a small, dedicated market garden could thrive here through thoughtful planning, careful crop selection, and a genuine commitment to quality.

What started as a home garden to feed our own family has since evolved into a full market garden business, built row by row with the goal of bringing truly fresh, locally grown produce to our community.

How We've Grown Over Time

Our early efforts taught us an important lesson: success in the desert requires focus and intention, not just ambition. We have since refined our approach, concentrating on succession planting proven staple crops, including salad greens, root vegetables, and heat-tolerant lettuce varieties developed specifically to withstand triple-digit summers. Today, our garden consists of multiple production rows, with plans to expand further as demand grows.

We have also begun building the infrastructure needed to support a reliable, professional operation, including cold storage solutions designed to keep produce fresh from harvest to table despite the Arizona heat. These investments allow us to maintain the quality and consistency our customers depend on, even in an unforgiving climate.

Our Goals Moving Forward

Our mission is to bridge the gap between our community and truly fresh, transparently grown food. We believe that where and how food is grown matters, and we are committed to expanding our capacity to serve local restaurants, farmers' markets, and individual customers throughout our region.

As we grow, we plan to lengthen our production rows, strengthen our post-harvest cold chain, and deepen our relationships with local restaurants and markets, all in pursuit of a simple goal: proving that a thriving, sustainable market garden is possible, even in the middle of the desert.
